Saint Paul fire crews responded to two different blazes at commercial recycling centers Thursday evening, both reportedly caused by construction debris igniting within larger waste piles.

At around 7:45 p.m. Monday, Saint Paul police responded to reports of gunfire and two people arguing near the 400 block of Pierce Street. Officers saw Earl Bennett, 40, walking along Snelling Avenue toward University Avenue, holding a gun to his head.

Officers found a man lying near the intersection with multiple gunshot wounds. According to police radio dispatches, the victim was found with wounds to the abdomen, leg and jaw. He was unresponsive and CPR was underway shortly before 9:55 p.m.

At about 5:23 p.m., officers responded to the 200 block of East 7th Street after getting the first reports of the altercation. When they arrived, police found the male victim lying in the parking lot suffering from apparent stab wounds.

According to the criminal complaint, officers responded to a reported shooting around 4:15 a.m. to the 1400 block of Seventh Street East in Saint Paul. Police found the victim with a gunshot wound through his chin and cheek.
