According to the charges, officers were called to United Hospital around 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 after two victims with stab wounds arrived. A third victim later walked into Regions Hospital with another stab wound. Investigators determined the violence happened near 7th Street and Maynard Drive East at an apartment building.

One of the victims had a bandage around his torso and was reportedly found with a knife on him by hospital staff. He did not speak with officers, but two women who said they were dating the two stabbing victims told police that Bergman was responsible for the stabbing. They said they had gone to confront Bergman about his treatment of their sister the day before and that Bergman had previously hit her. During a confrontation in the parking lot of his apartment, the sisters said Bergman struck one of them with his car and later stabbed one of the men during a second confrontation.

The second male victim had stab wounds to his chest and arm. He told officers that he and the others had gone to check on the sister, who had messaged them saying her “crazy ex Malakhi” was acting out. When they arrived, they found her fighting with another woman. The man said he got out of the car and was tackled by Bergman. During the fight, he saw Bergman punching his friend, and after he intervened, both he and his friend realized they’d been stabbed. They then drove to the hospital for treatment.

The third victim, a woman, was receiving treatment for a wound to the left side of her back. She also named Bergman as the person who stabbed her.

Officers spotted Bergman driving nearby and pulled him over. He had visible injuries to his head and a cut on his hand. His girlfriend was in the car with him. Bergman told police he had earlier reported a possible break-in and was trying to leave with his girlfriend when they were approached by a group of about ten people, some of whom were armed. He claimed he was cut while grabbing a knife that someone had pulled on him, and said he picked it up in self-defense.

He told police he never used the knife to stab anyone and gave it to his girlfriend after the confrontation ended. He also said the group had been harassing him for days and that his ex-girlfriend still had access to his apartment.

Bergman was initially ordered held on $1 million bail but was later granted conditional release if he posts $5,000 bail with conditions. As part of his release conditions, he must remain law-abiding, be under supervised release, and is barred from possessing firearms or dangerous weapons. He must also comply with any court orders including no contact with each of the victims.

His next court appearance is scheduled for July. Each assault charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.
