Just before 10:50 p.m., officers responded to the 1300 block of Phalen Boulevard after a pedestrian was hit by a car. Police learned that a Nissan Sentra had rear-ended another vehicle at the intersection of Johnson Parkway and 7th Street just moments earlier. The driver of the Sentra did not stop and instead fled northbound.

The driver of the vehicle that was struck followed the fleeing Sentra toward Phalen Boulevard and Johnson Parkway. When the Nissan reached the area of Phalen Boulevard, it struck an adult woman and again kept going. Police say the woman was unresponsive when first responders arrived.

The passenger of the car that had followed the suspect got out and began life-saving efforts while 911 was called. Saint Paul Fire medics transported the victim to Regions Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A short time later, officers located the Nissan Sentra abandoned near Maryland Avenue and Phalen Boulevard. Police set a perimeter in the area and began a search using K-9s and a Minnesota State Patrol helicopter, but the suspect was not found.

The woman remains hospitalized in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to identify the driver. No arrests have been announced.
