A 26-year-old Shakopee man was shot and killed during an Eid al-Adha prayer service at Canterbury Park on Wednesday morning and a suspect was arrested earlier today, according to police.
The victim, Khalid Ibrahim Abdi, was attending the prayer service at the Canterbury Park Expo Center around 9:55 a.m. on May 27 when he was shot multiple times, the Shakopee Police Department said.
Abdi was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment but later died from his injuries, officials confirmed. The incident was upgraded to a homicide investigation Wednesday afternoon.

A suspect was taken into custody by around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, and is being held at Scott County Jail pending charges, police said. The suspect has not yet been identified.
The shooting occurred during an Eid al-Adha event hosted by the Samaha Islamic Center at Canterbury Park. Officials have not yet released more information on the circumstances leading up to the shooting or a motive for the suspect.
Abdi was a field representative for AFSCME Council 5, according to reporting by the Minnesota Star Tribune. In a statement, the labor union said he will be remembered for his “organizing spirit, warm presence and passion for fighting for the working class.”
