According to initial information released by police, an officer encountered the patient in the hospital parking lot, where the suspect was non-compliant and physically resisted during a prolonged engagement. Police said no deadly force was used.

Investigators later confirmed the suspect allegedly assaulted a member of the hospital’s security staff before law enforcement arrived. That security officer, Andrea Merrell, 43, of North Branch, was transported to Regions Hospital with life-threatening injuries. On Saturday, authorities confirmed Merrell died as a result of those injuries.
