According to initial information released by police, an officer encountered the patient in the hospital parking lot, where the suspect was non-compliant and physically resisted during a prolonged engagement. Police said no deadly force was used.
Investigators later confirmed the suspect allegedly assaulted a member of the hospital’s security staff before law enforcement arrived. That security officer, Andrea Merrell, 43, of North Branch, was transported to Regions Hospital with life-threatening injuries. On Saturday, authorities confirmed Merrell died as a result of those injuries.
The suspect was identified as Jonathan Winch, 35, of Chisago City. He is currently being held at the Chisago County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault causing great bodily harm. A formal charging decision has not yet been announced but is expected after a review by the Chisago County Attorney’s Office.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation, along with several local law enforcement and emergency response agencies. A jail booking photo for Winch was not immediately available.
Authorities extended condolences to Merrell’s family, loved ones and coworkers, as well as hospital staff affected by the incident.
