Deputy Shoots Knife-Wielding Man in Monticello
BY MN CRIME STAFF
A Wright County deputy shot a man who was wielding a large knife in the street Tuesday night in Monticello, the sheriff’s office confirms.
Authorities say the man advanced on deputies with the knife despite repeated commands for him to stop.
According to the sheriff’s office, the incident began around 8:56 p.m. on the 900 block of Golf Course Road after a 911 caller reported a man in the street yelling and carrying a large knife. Deputies arrived and saw the man walking on the roadway still holding the knife. Despite deputies ordering him to stop and drop the weapon, he ignored them and continued walking toward the deputies.
A Taser was deployed but failed to stop him. As he moved closer, another deputy fired his service weapon and struck the man. Deputies took him into custody and provided first aid until medics arrived. He was taken to North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale where he is said to be in stable condition as of early Wednesday morning.

The deputies involved were not hurt. The sheriff’s office says all involved had their body cameras activated during the encounter and have since been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard after a deputy-involved shooting.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now handling the investigation. Authorities say no additional information is available for release and further updates will come from the BCA.
This was the second shooting involving law enforcement on Tuesday in the state. A Plymouth police officer shot a man around 4:30 a.m. during a domestic disturbance where the suspect was armed with a handgun. That suspect was also taken to North Memorial Hospital and was in stable condition.
