A driver led police on a chase over curbs and through parking lots in Cambridge, and a deputy later found 22 grams of suspected methamphetamine along the truck’s path, according to the complaint.

Nils Anthony Njus, 62, of Zimmerman, faces two felony charges: third-degree drug possession and fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, according to a complaint filed October 19 in Isanti County District Court.

According to the complaint, a Cambridge police officer was in the area of a residence that had generated multiple reports of drug activity on the night of October 17, 2026. A sheriff’s deputy told the officer that a red Dodge truck mentioned earlier in the shift had pulled into a gas station, and the officer saw that it was the same truck that had been parked in the residence’s driveway. After the truck left the gas station, the officer followed and observed two people inside.

The complaint states the officer saw the truck fail to signal properly before changing lanes multiple times. The vehicle then signaled to turn and made a turn, at which point the officer activated emergency lights behind the truck. The truck slowed but did not stop, then accelerated and began turning left and right rapidly while fleeing.

According to the complaint, the driver continued to flee, driving through parking lots and over curbs and grass, eventually coming to a stop at a sign. The driver, later identified as Nils Anthony Njus, exited the vehicle with his hands in the air and complied with the officer’s commands. The passenger ran from the scene but was later apprehended by a deputy.

The complaint says Njus was handcuffed and searched. The officer found cash and a small jar containing what appeared to be marijuana wax in his pocket. Both items were inventoried. Njus was placed in the back of a squad car and read the Miranda Warning, but refused to speak with police.

The passenger was also read the Miranda Warning and agreed to speak with officers, according to the complaint.

Two deputies later searched the route the truck had taken, and one found a baggie of white crystal material believed to be methamphetamine in a grassy area beside the truck’s tire tracks, the complaint states. The passenger told an officer the drugs belonged to Njus, who pulled them from his pocket, handed them to him and told him to throw them out the window, according to the complaint. The substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed 22 grams.
