The victim told officers she lived at the apartment with a man and had been living there since March 2026. She said she had keys to the apartment, all her property was there and her mail was delivered to that address. The victim reported that after an argument with the man, he left the apartment. Shortly after, Garcia-Cruz, who was the building caretaker, knocked on the door and began yelling profanities.
The victim said she eventually opened the door, at which point Garcia-Cruz came at her with a taser. The taser was activated but did not make contact with the victim. The two women struggled, and a neighbor noticed the victim was bleeding.
Officers also spoke with the man the victim lived with, who said the victim had threatened to trash the apartment, so he called Garcia-Cruz and asked her to check on it. He remained on the phone with Garcia-Cruz during the confrontation and told her to back off as the situation escalated. He said the call disconnected, and after the altercation Garcia-Cruz called him back and said she had stabbed the victim.
Before officers identified her as a suspect, Garcia-Cruz told police she “sliced her a** up.” She was arrested and later released from custody before charges were filed.
The charge of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon alleges Garcia-Cruz used a weapon to inflict substantial bodily harm on the victim.
