A man and a second suspect jogged toward the victim’s vehicle in a south Minneapolis alley moments before the fatal shooting, according to the charges.

Keshaun Schelven Coatie, 29, faces a charge of aiding and abetting second-degree murder with intent, not premeditated.

According to the complaint, officers responded to a shooting at about 10:24 p.m. Aug. 7 and found the victim, an adult male, lying next to his vehicle with gunshot wounds to his torso and pelvis. Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim died at the scene. Police recovered four discharged 9mm cartridge cases, one inside the vehicle and three on the ground nearby. Forensic analysis later determined the cartridge cases were fired from two different guns.

Surveillance footage captured a white Dodge Charger arriving in a nearby lot minutes before the shooting. Three men exited the vehicle: one entered a nearby apartment building, while a man investigators identified as Coatie and a third man, called “Suspect 2” in the complaint, remained in the lot.

The footage shows Coatie and Suspect 2 standing near a car, then jogging toward the victim’s vehicle while holding their waistbands, a gesture investigators say is common when people are carrying guns. The two men were off camera for about 30 seconds, during which time a ShotSpotter activation was recorded in the area, consistent with the timing of the shooting.

Coatie and Suspect 2 then ran back to the Charger, with Coatie appearing to put an object in his waistband before placing an item in the trunk. Both men drove away in the Charger, according to the complaint.

Automatic license plate reader data showed the Charger arrived shortly before the shooting and left soon after. Investigators later found a fingerprint matching Coatie on the trunk of the Charger. DNA analysis of samples from the steering wheel, gear shift and a phone charger inside the vehicle supported the inclusion of Coatie’s DNA profile.

Investigators tracked Coatie’s phone activity and found it was off or inactive for about 40 minutes surrounding the homicide, but its known locations and uses coincided with the Charger’s movements at relevant times as captured by city surveillance and license plate reader data. Investigators located Coatie standing near the Charger on Aug. 8 and interviewed him Sept. 17, the complaint says. He admitted borrowing the vehicle for “one or two days” but claimed he used it to travel to Chicago.

Phone records showed he was in Chicago Aug. 12-16, but officers located the Charger in Minneapolis on Aug. 13, according to the complaint. Coatie also claimed he was in Ramsey, Minnesota, at the time of the homicide, but the complaint says phone records, license plate reader records and surveillance footage contradicted that. Investigators noted several other false statements during his interview.

The complaint states Coatie is currently charged in a separate case with prohibited person in possession of a firearm and third-degree drug sale, and was previously convicted of second-degree assault. The complaint also says he is known to be involved in significant narcotics sales and has ties out of state.

The charge was filed Sept. 28 in Hennepin County District Court.
