
Driver Charged After Stolen Vehicle Crash Spree In Sherburne County

The incidents happened around 4:10 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, near eastbound Highway 10 and County Road 50 in Big Lake Township, followed by a second crash roughly 40 minutes later.

The crash happened around 6:45 a.m. Oct. 14, 2025, on Highway 169 near 213th Avenue Northwest, where investigators say the pickup driver crossed the southbound lanes and collided with the motorcyclist.

Just after midnight Thursday, at about 12:34 a.m., Albert Lea police were alerted to a vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 35 that was believed to be associated with the active AMBER Alert.

The charges stem from a Jan. 4 incident at a residence on Fillmore Street Northwest in Elk River after a woman called police and asked for a welfare check on the victim.

According to court records, 35-year-old Johnathan James Schafer pleaded guilty in September to both felony failure to stop after a collision resulting in death and fourth-degree driving while impaired.

Ethan Richard Rorman, of Coon Rapids, and his uncle, Jantje C. Rorman, of Big Lake, were charged after deputies found multiple explosive components, controlled substances and a sawed-off shotgun.

A man who lives in the area returned home from work to find his mailbox destroyed along the roadway and discovered Kampa deceased in the ditch nearby.

The crash happened around 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of 146th Street and 285th Avenue Northwest. The rider, identified as Andrew R. Steadman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies responded just before 8 a.m. Monday to the intersection of Brenda Boulevard and Edgewood Street in Becker, where the child was reportedly struck.

Zha Vang, of Elk River, is accused of forcing his way inside the building with a shotgun, damaging county property, confronting a mother and daughter in their vehicle and jabbing a knife toward the face of another person parked outside.

Sherburne County authorities say the man, identified as Zha Vang, 51, of Elk River, was taken into custody outside the building shortly after the incident, which occurred around 9:30 a.m. No injuries were reported.

A woman said the suspect called her and said his girlfriend, Julia Marie Marthaler, jumped out of his truck. He did not contact 911 himself.
