A department spokesperson said officers were dispatched to investigate the reported dispute when the driver got out of the stopped vehicle and fired a gun, hitting the officer who initiated the stop. That officer and another Superior officer nearby fired back and struck the suspect in the abdomen.
The wounded officer was given aid at the scene, was taken to a hospital and was later released, the police department said. No other officers were hurt. Police say the man drove away after the exchange of gunfire and crashed into a nearby school building. Superior officers arrested him around 7:01 a.m. with help from Duluth Police, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the St. Louis County Minnesota Sheriff's Office. The man was given medical care and taken to a hospital before being booked into the Douglas County Jail. He has not yet been formally identified.
