A person is dead after a Superior, Wisc., police officer shot them during a physical altercation Tuesday night, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
The DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation said a Superior Police Department officer located a wanted person in the 1700 block of Oakes Avenue around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. Two other people were with the wanted person at the time.
As the officer approached the three, one of the additional subjects attempted to flee. The officer and the fleeing person got into a physical altercation, during which the officer discharged their weapon and struck the individual. A separate firearm was also recovered from the scene, officials say.

Life-saving measures were performed on the individual, but they were pronounced dead at the scene. The DOJ has not yet released the identity of the person killed.
The officer was injured during the altercation, was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition.
According to the DOJ, the involved officer was wearing a body camera at the time of the incident and has been placed on leave per department policy.
DCI is leading the investigation with assistance from a DCI Crime Response Specialist and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The investigative reports will be turned over to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes.
The DOJ has not yet said what the original person was wanted for or what happened to the other two people at the scene.
