BY MN CRIME STAFF

Prosecutors have charged a 30-year-old man with murder in a shooting that left an 18-year-old dead in south Minneapolis last year.

The shooting happened early Tuesday morning, May 13, 2025, near the intersection of 27th Street West and Pillsbury Avenue South.

Abdirahman Yusuf Mohamed, of Minneapolis, is charged with second-degree murder with intent, second-degree murder during a drive-by shooting and illegal possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent crime in connection with the death of Yamil Joseph Rosado Arellano, 18, of Brooklyn Park.

According to the criminal complaint, Minneapolis police were called to the area at about 2:19 a.m. after several people reported hearing a gunshot and a woman screaming that her boyfriend had been shot. Officers arriving at the scene found Rosado Arellano slumped in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that had crashed into a parked car. He had suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later ruled the death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the neck.

Investigators learned Rosado Arellano’s girlfriend had been riding in the passenger seat when the shooting occurred. She told officers the couple had gone to the area to pick up food at a restaurant on Lake Street. While in a nearby alley, Rosado Arellano briefly encountered another driver later identified as Mohamed. During that interaction, Mohamed allegedly shined a light into Rosado Arellano’s vehicle and Rosado Arellano responded with a middle-finger gesture.

After picking up their food, the couple drove north and then turned east onto 27th Street West. Near Pillsbury Avenue South, they encountered the same white Toyota again.

The woman told investigators both drivers rolled down their windows. She reported hearing Mohamed say, “I’ll kill you,” before Rosado Arellano responded, “What…are you talking about?”

She then saw Mohamed, still seated in the driver’s seat of the Toyota, point a handgun toward Rosado Arellano’s head through the open window and fire. Rosado Arellano was struck and his vehicle rolled forward before crashing into a parked car. Mohamed then drove away from the scene.

The woman provided investigators with a detailed description of the shooter, including his appearance, manner of speaking and distinctive teeth.

Security footage from the area captured the sound of a gunshot at about 2:18 a.m. and showed a small white SUV leaving the area seconds later. Officers reviewing the footage believed the vehicle resembled a Toyota Venza.

About 90 minutes after the shooting, Minneapolis police located a stolen white Toyota Venza abandoned less than a mile east of the scene. Officers noted the engine was still warm when they found it. The vehicle was towed for forensic testing.

Swabs collected from the steering wheel, gear shift and engine start button produced a DNA profile that matched Mohamed, according to investigators. A fingerprint recovered from the exterior driver’s door was also identified as belonging to him.

Detectives also obtained call detail records and cell site location data for a phone known to be used by Mohamed. Records showed the phone making and receiving calls between about 2:13 a.m. and 2:24 a.m. while connected to cell towers covering the area where the shooting occurred.

Investigators also compared the witness description to body-worn camera footage from a prior police interaction involving Mohamed. Officers noted the distinctive appearance of his teeth matched the description given by Rosado Arellano’s girlfriend.

Court records show Mohamed has several prior criminal convictions in Minnesota. In August 2019, he was convicted in Dakota County of second-degree aggravated robbery. In December 2022, he was convicted in Hennepin County of felony receiving stolen property connected to a June 2022 incident. Records also show a 2021 misdemeanor trespassing conviction and a 2024 gross misdemeanor conviction for giving a peace officer a false name.

At the time the complaint was filed, Mohamed was already in custody at the Hennepin County Adult Correctional Facility serving a sentence in an unrelated felony case.

Mohamed was charged by warrant and is expected to make an initial court appearance on Wednesday, March 11. Court records show initial bail in the case has been set at $1 million. If convicted, Mohamed faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
