Rochester Officer Fatally Shoots Man Who Grabbed Cop's Gun

A man is dead after a Rochester police officer shot him during a struggle at an apartment Wednesday night.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now investigating the use of deadly force.

Officers with the Rochester Police Department and a social worker from the Crisis Response Team responded to the 1900 block of Ashland Drive Northwest around 9:30 p.m. on March 11 for a domestic-related call involving a man reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis.

After speaking with the man, officers determined he was a threat to himself and others and placed him on a 72-hour emergency hold.

A struggle broke out as officers tried to take the man into custody, and he allegedly grabbed ahold of one officer's firearm, according to the Rochester Police Department. Another officer then shot the man.

Officers and paramedics administered life-saving measures at the scene. The man was transported to Mayo Clinic Hospital – Saint Marys Campus, where he was pronounced dead.

RPD requested that the BCA's Force Investigation Unit conduct an independent investigation, which is standard procedure whenever deadly force is used by a police officer in Minnesota. The man's identity has not been released as of publication.
