A woman was stabbed in the chest and punched in the face inside a northeast Minneapolis home, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County.

Derik Wesley Moran faces a charge of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon in Hennepin County District Court.

According to the complaint, Minneapolis police responded to a report of a domestic assault stabbing on the 2600 block of Madison Street NE on October 21. Officers found an adult female victim on the front porch, covered in blood and lying on her left side. The victim told officers she had been stabbed on her right side, lower chest area, and officers observed a large, deep laceration that appeared to be a stab wound.

The victim was transported to the hospital by EMS. She told officers she had come home from work, gone downstairs to relax on the couch with her dog and fallen asleep. She said she woke up to Moran, who also lives at the residence, approaching her and saying, “Are you ready for this?” The victim then felt a sharp pain and realized she had been stabbed on her right side. She also reported being punched on the left side of her face.

At the hospital, doctors determined the stabbing had chipped one of the victim’s ribs and that her liver and one of her lungs had been cut by the blade.

Officers found Moran inside the residence and took him into custody. In a post-Mirandized statement, Moran admitted to stabbing the victim. He told investigators he lives at the incident location with the victim. Moran said he was unemployed and had been drinking gin since about noon that day. He told officers he was angry at the victim because he suspected her of infidelity.

Moran described stabbing the victim with a 4-inch knife with a curved, polished blade and a white handle, which he carried in a black sheath.

The charge of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon alleges Moran assaulted the victim with a knife.

The complaint was filed October 23 in Hennepin County District Court.
