A Saint Peter man is accused of firing a handgun during a dispute at a Saint Peter apartment where two young children were present, and officers later found methamphetamine in his vehicle, according to a criminal complaint.

Kevin Alejandro Figueroa Zuniga, 25, faces five felony charges in Nicollet County District Court: second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, threats of violence, reckless discharge of a firearm within a municipality, third-degree drug possession and fifth-degree drug possession.

According to the complaint, officers responded to multiple calls about shots fired at an apartment complex in Saint Peter on October 9, 2026. The building was in a public housing zone. Officers found Figueroa Zuniga exiting an apartment and spoke with him about the situation inside.

Figueroa Zuniga told officers he had gone to the apartment after a woman called him to say a man there had assaulted her, and that the man had a shotgun inside. With his permission, officers checked Figueroa Zuniga’s vehicle for firearms and found a small canvas holster that appeared to contain a glass pipe.

Officers had the man come out of the apartment. He told them there was a shotgun inside and that Figueroa Zuniga had fired the man’s handgun. Officers went in to secure the firearms and found a loaded shotgun behind a basement door, with two children, ages 9 and 5, on the same floor.

A handgun was found on the grates of a grill on the back patio, with a magazine but no ammunition. Three empty shell casings were found in the front yard.

At the police department, Figueroa Zuniga told officers he went to the apartment after the woman called to say the man had laid a hand on her during an argument. He said the man was very angry, so he moved a handgun.

He first said he emptied the gun and moved it to the back of the apartment, but when asked whether he had fired it, he said he fired one round, pointed at the ground, because he knew the man carried a knife and saw him move toward the woman. He denied firing any other shots.

The man told officers that Figueroa Zuniga “barged into” the apartment holding a handgun at his side and that he told him to leave because children were present. He said the handgun was his, that Figueroa Zuniga fired three to four rounds into the air that night, and that he took out his shotgun after hearing the shots.

The woman told officers the man had scared her but had not touched her, according to the complaint.

After the interviews, officers learned the holster from Figueroa Zuniga’s vehicle held a plastic bag of a white, crystal-like substance that weighed about 7 grams and field-tested positive for methamphetamine, the complaint says.

The charges against Figueroa Zuniga include assault with a dangerous weapon for allegedly firing the handgun, threats of violence, reckless discharge of a firearm within a municipality and two counts of methamphetamine possession, one of them for possession in a public housing zone.

The complaint was filed October 12 in Nicollet County District Court.
