Saint Peter Man Charged in Robbery Attempt That Turned Deadly

A Saint Peter man stored the rifle used in a deadly North Mankato robbery attempt and helped the men involved afterward, charges say.

Devon Bruce Bakke, 18, faces six felony charges: aiding an offender in connection with second-degree murder, aiding an offender by obstructing the investigation of attempted first-degree aggravated robbery, aiding and abetting attempted first-degree aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit first-degree aggravated robbery, aiding an offender to avoid arrest for second-degree murder and aiding an offender to avoid arrest for attempted first-degree aggravated robbery.

According to the complaint, officers responded to a residential neighborhood in North Mankato at about 11:03 p.m. on May 23, 2026, after multiple reports of gunshots. Witnesses told police they saw someone speeding away from the area in a silver car with a loud exhaust that appeared to be a Chevrolet Impala. Officers arrived to find a car that had rolled into a residence, with the victim inside, doors locked and windows up.

After forcing entry, officers discovered the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead. An autopsy determined the cause of death was a gunshot to the head and ruled the manner of death a homicide.

Investigators noted multiple bullet holes in the windshield and hood of the victim’s vehicle, consistent with rifle fire. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension processed the car and documented several bullet holes on the driver’s side. Officers spoke with the victim’s mother, who said the victim had just left her home and was supposed to meet a friend that night.

The friend told police the victim planned to meet Jaxon Sageng to sell $3,000 worth of THC cartridges. Officers learned Sageng owned a silver 2010 Chevrolet Impala matching the description seen fleeing the scene. Using technology, investigators linked a Ford Focus registered to Ahmed Fuad Mohamud as being associated with the Impala. Officers also knew the two men were associates.

At about 3:11 a.m. on May 24, officers found the Impala abandoned near an apartment building in Saint Peter. Investigators searching it found a live round and a spent rifle casing. Later that day, Sageng told police that Ryan Robert Wolner had contacted him looking for someone to rob, using the slang term “plug” for a drug dealer.

He said Wolner asked him to set up the victim for a robbery, offering to pay him $100 for arranging the meeting. He admitted he agreed and contacted the victim to set up a sale of $2,000 worth of cannabis products.

He told officers that Wolner insisted on using the Impala and Sageng’s cellphone to carry out the robbery, so the victim would not suspect anything. He handed over his keys and phone. Later that night, he said, Wolner called him, sounding winded, and told him the victim had been shot and was dead.

According to the complaint, Bakke told investigators he had been keeping a bag holding Wolner’s AR-style rifle in his closet. He said Wolner picked up the bag at about 10 p.m. on May 23, saying he needed the rifle to “rob” the victim, and brought it back after 11 p.m., saying the victim had been shot in the head and was dead. Bakke said he then drove Wolner and another man to Mankato, and that Wolner threw two cellphones out of the car window on the way. The next day, he said, he brought the bag with the rifle to Wolner’s family’s cabin.

The charges were filed August 3, 2026, in Nicollet County District Court.
