Eden Prairie police believe the shooting that wounded two St. Paul teens in a parking lot outside Eden Prairie High School during the school’s homecoming football game Friday, Oct. 2, was gang-related, the department said Saturday.

The two people who were shot, Somali males ages 18 and 17, are both from St. Paul and are known to law enforcement, police said. The 18-year-old was released from Hennepin Healthcare on Saturday, and the 17-year-old remained hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Before the shooting, a large fight broke out on the west side of Aerie Stadium, according to police. Officers broke up the fight and removed several people from the stadium grounds. Shortly afterward, officers were called to a report of a shooting in the parking lot on the north side of the high school.

Police said they are pursuing multiple leads but do not yet have suspect information specific enough to release. No arrests have been announced. The department said it is working with regional law enforcement partners as the investigation continues.

Officers were first called to the game at about 8:40 p.m. Friday. The stadium was evacuated, and a reunification point for parents to pick up students was set up at Round Lake Park.

“No homecoming, in any community, should be disrupted by gun violence,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said Friday night, adding that state officials were assisting local authorities.
