A 39-year-old man died Friday after he was apparently electrocuted while swimming in Lake Vermilion and make contact with a docked boat, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says.

St. Louis County dispatchers received a 911 call around 4:45 p.m. on July 17 reporting that a man was in the water and being electrocuted by a boat near the 9100 block of Voss Road in Beatty Township, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies responded with the Cook Fire Department and EMS, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and the man died at the scene.

A preliminary investigation shows the man was swimming when he grabbed a docked boat and, according to witnesses, appeared to receive an electric shock and went unconscious. The boat’s electrical system appeared to be plugged into a nearby boathouse at the time, the sheriff’s office said.

The man’s name is being withheld until his family is notified. The sheriff’s office said no further details are available while the medical examiner’s investigation is pending.

The Cook Fire Department, Cook Ambulance, LifeLink and Lake Country Power assisted the sheriff’s office.
