Minneapolis Woman Charged in 2024 Shooting, Leaving Man With Permanent Injuries

A Minneapolis woman is facing felony charges after investigators say she took part in a violent attempted robbery last spring that left a man with life-altering injuries.

According to a criminal complaint, 26-year-old Asha Jibril Mohamud has been charged with first-degree assault causing great bodily harm and first-degree aggravated robbery in connection with the April 18, 2024 shooting inside an apartment on Golden Valley Road.

Police say officers responded to a report of gunfire at the apartment complex, where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. He was rushed to North Memorial Medical Center and underwent treatment for severe injuries to his groin, bladder and colon. As a result, the man must now use an ostomy bag.

A witness told police they saw a man and two women in the victim’s apartment just before hearing the gunshots. Investigators later identified the male suspect as 34-year-old Nur Omer Ahmed. The witness reported hearing the victim say “Don’t do that” before shots rang out. The suspects fled and cartridge casings were recovered from the scene.

The victim later told detectives that Mohamud, whom he knew as “Ishee,” had been in his apartment when Ahmed entered with a gun and demanded, “Give it up!” Ahmed shot the victim once before the victim fired back. The suspects then left without taking anything.

Investigators obtained surveillance video from the apartment building showing Mohamud, Ahmed and another woman arriving in a white SUV. Footage also showed them fleeing after the gunfire. Additional video from a gas station two hours before the shooting captured Ahmed driving the same SUV and entering the store. Both Mohamud and Ahmed admitted to investigators that they were present during the attempted robbery. Ahmed also told police that Mohamud had identified the victim as a target and directed him to the apartment.

Court records show Mohamud’s next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 30. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison for each charge, along with mandatory minimum sentences tied to firearm use.

Ahmed remains in custody and is currently in prison awaiting sentencing in multiple cases. He pleaded guilty in June to an added count of second-degree assault, with sentencing scheduled for Oct. 23 for this Minneapolis shooting. Under the plea deal, Ahmed will serve 56 months in prison for an unrelated drug case and 36 months for the assault charge, with the sentences running at the same time. Prosecutors agreed to dismiss the remaining counts, including a separate fifth-degree assault case.
