A Lakeville dance instructor has been sentenced after admitting to sexually assaulting a teenage student he taught in 2022.

According to the criminal complaint, Lakeville police began investigating Olson after receiving a report in Nov. 2023 that he had been involved in a sexual relationship with the student. The victim told investigators that Olson was her dance instructor for two years and began giving her individual instruction.

The complaint said Olson had authority over students’ performance assignments and began contacting the girl through direct messages on Instagram. The victim reported that the conversations became inappropriate, and Olson pressured her to come to his home in Lakeville. She told police that he threatened suicide if she did not respond quickly enough and that they had sex at his residence between five and eight times during the summer and fall of 2022 while she was still under 18.

When questioned by investigators, Olson admitted to being the victim’s teacher and eventually acknowledged having sex with her. Police noted that Olson mumbled through much of the interview, repeatedly covered his face and said he couldn’t tell the truth because he would “get in trouble.”

On Oct. 29, 2025, a judge sentenced Olson to a stay of imposition, meaning the felony conviction could be reduced to a misdemeanor if he successfully completes probation. He was ordered to serve 60 days in the Dakota County Jail, with work release allowed if eligible, and received one day of credit for time served. He will be on supervised probation for seven years.

Court records show Olson must complete a sex offender treatment program, undergo psychiatric evaluation, and comply with random searches, polygraph exams and internet monitoring of his devices. He is prohibited from contacting the victim or anyone under 18 without probation approval and from holding any position of authority over minors or vulnerable people. He is also barred from possessing or viewing any pornographic material and from owning firearms.

Olson was fined $130 and ordered to provide a DNA sample. Restitution will be determined by Dakota County Community Corrections within 60 days. He is required to register as a sex offender in accordance with Minnesota law.
