The victim, 22-year-old Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif, also of Faribault, was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Hared, Cariif and a third man had carpooled to work that night, investigators say. Hared, who held a permit to carry, had brought a gun equipped with a flashlight attachment and left it in the car during their overnight shift.

Around 1 a.m., Hared discovered the flashlight attachment was missing from his gun. After an unsuccessful search of the car, he accused the two other men of stealing it.

About three hours later, the men returned to the car to search again for the attachment. Hared continued to accuse Cariif and the third man of taking it, and Cariif became angry at being accused. The two men engaged in two separate physical altercations, court documents say.

During the second fight, Hared pulled out his gun from his waistband while Cariif tried to force it from his hand. Hared fired once, and the bullet struck a nearby unoccupied vehicle. Cariif and the third man yelled at Hared not to shoot. Hared fired a second time, striking Cariif in the chest.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Cariif died from a gunshot wound to his heart, lung and aorta and listed the manner of death as homicide.

Hared remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail awaiting transfer to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
