Deputy Shot, Suspect Dead After Foot Chase Near Walker
An investigation is underway after a shooting left a Cass County deputy wounded and a man dead near Walker late Sunday afternoon.
According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 caller reported hearing gunfire near homes along Old Agency Drive and Onigum Road Northwest at 4:37 p.m.

Deputies went to the area and began looking into the report. They later approached a man walking in the 8000 block of Onigum Road Northwest. The man took off running and a foot chase followed, with an exchange of gunfire occurring at some point during the pursuit, a sheriff’s office spokesperson said in a written statement.
A deputy was struck and was flown by medical helicopter to a hospital in Fargo for treatment. The man who ran from the deputies was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity nor the name of the deputy, who is now confirmed to have sustained a gunshot wound to the upper-right thigh.

The injured deputy has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Bryan Welk said body-worn cameras were active during the encounter and the deputies involved have been placed on critical incident leave as the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigation continues.
