73-Year-Old Man Killed in Otter Tail County House Fire

A man died after being found inside a burning home Thursday night in Otter Tail County, authorities say.

The fire was reported around 7:40 p.m. Jan. 29 at a residence on County Highway 77 in Compton Township, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the incident does not appear to be suspicious.

When responders arrived, they found 73-year-old David Hanes unresponsive inside the home. Life-saving measures were performed at the scene before he was transported to Astera Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Wadena Fire Department, Bluffton Fire Department, Deer Creek Fire Department, Henning Fire Department, Henning Ambulance, Astera EMS and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Investigators said the residence was considered a total loss and a family dog was found deceased inside.

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate.
