1 Dead After Disabled Vehicle Struck on Interstate 90

A passenger died Thursday night after a driver struck a deer on Interstate 90 and was then hit by another westbound driver in Mower County.
The crash happened around 8:55 p.m. Jan. 29 on westbound Interstate 90 just west of milepost 182 in Windom Township, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Initial information indicates the 60-year-old female driver of a Subaru Outback was traveling westbound when she struck a deer. The Subaru was disabled and stopped in a westbound lane after the collision.
A short time later, the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder, a 36-year-old woman from Austin, was also westbound and collided with the disabled Subaru.
61-year-old Kent Joel Shultz, of Osage, Iowa, was riding as a passenger in the Subaru and died as a result of the crash, the patrol said.

The driver of the Subaru was taken to Mayo in Austin with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The driver of the Nissan was not injured and didn’t require medical care.
Airbags deployed in both vehicles and authorities said seat belts were in use, with alcohol not suspected for anyone involved. The roadway was dry at the time of the crash.
The Minnesota State Patrol responded with assistance from Mower County authorities, Austin Police and Fire, Mayo Ambulance and Rose Creek Fire.
