Shortly after the initial impact, the driver of a westbound Peterbilt semi struck the Jeep, which came to rest facing north in the left lane. The semi driver then pulled forward onto the right shoulder, the State Patrol says.
The CR-V was driven by a 25-year-old Bloomington man, with a 24-year-old Shakopee woman as a passenger. The Jeep was driven by a 64-year-old Shakopee man and the Peterbilt was driven by a 49-year-old man from Ham Lake.
The State Patrol has not yet identified the person who died and has not released the names of the others involved in the crash.
Road conditions were dry at the time and officials have not yet disclosed what may have caused the two drivers to collide. Clean-up closed westbound I-494 for about four hours and the freeway was re-opened by 8:30 a.m.
The Bloomington Fire Department, Edina Police Department, Allina Ambulance, the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office assisted the State Patrol.
