A man stabbed his roommate with a kitchen knife while the victim was asleep in a Bloomington residence, causing life-threatening injuries that required emergency surgery, according to the complaint.

Antonio Cl Baumgartner, 30, is charged in Hennepin County District Court with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault in a complaint filed October 30.

The complaint says officers from the Bloomington Police Department were dispatched to the 2800 block of 96th Street West for a reported stabbing. When officers arrived, they found the victim in a garage with a towel wrapped around his arm, covered in blood and in significant distress. The victim told police he had been stabbed in his residence on the 2400 block of 97th Street West by Baumgartner, who was his roommate.

According to the complaint, the victim reported he was asleep when he heard loud pounding on his bedroom door. Baumgartner then entered the room and began stabbing the victim without warning. The victim said Baumgartner fled the scene after the stabbing.

Officers observed deep lacerations on the victim’s forearm and inner bicep. Paramedics providing care noted a deep laceration to the victim’s stomach, with a portion of his bowel protruding from the wound. The complaint states the victim required a six-hour surgery due to the severity of his injuries.

As part of the investigation, officers learned Baumgartner may have fled to a relative’s home. A family member told police Baumgartner called at about 2:20 a.m., said “I’ve had it with this place,” and asked to be picked up. The family member also reported knowing Baumgartner had been using drugs earlier and was concerned about him. Baumgartner was not found at that address.

The complaint says Baumgartner was later arrested at the scene of a break-in, with blood visible on his pants.
