A Brainerd man is accused of shooting two men after a fight broke out outside a Mahnomen bar early Aug. 1, according to a criminal complaint.

Ryan Henry James Davis Pacheco, 24, faces seven felony charges, including two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault causing great bodily harm and a count of possessing a firearm after a conviction for a crime of violence. The complaint was filed Aug. 6 in Mahnomen County District Court and was issued with a warrant for his arrest.

According to the complaint, officers from several agencies were sent shortly after midnight to the King’s Corner bar in Mahnomen on a report of a shooting. A woman who had been walking home from the bar told investigators that three men offered her a ride and that, as they walked toward parked vehicles, they confronted two other men. One of the three struck one of the two men and a fight broke out, she said, and as she walked away she heard several gunshots.

A deputy found one of the men lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his lower back, the complaint says. The other man was found outside a nearby liquor store, shot in both knees. Both were taken to a hospital.

The man shot in the back told a deputy he saw a man he knew as “Sly” or “Slide” pull a silver-gray pistol and fire a shot into the ground after the other man was punched, then heard several more shots as he ran and felt a burning sensation before he fell. He identified the shooter as Pacheco and said he feared Pacheco was going to kill him, according to the complaint. The second man later told an investigator that the person who shot him was known to him as “Slide.”

Other people at the scene told an officer the shooter was known as “Slide,” and a neighbor’s security camera recorded one of the wounded men running through a backyard, falling and getting back up, the complaint says.

The complaint says Pacheco was on federal probation for a felon-in-possession conviction at the time, and that his Minnesota convictions include second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, fleeing police in a motor vehicle and fifth-degree assault.

Each attempted murder count carries a maximum of 20 years in prison, half the 40-year maximum for second-degree murder, according to the complaint.
