A man struck another man with a spiked baseball bat, choked him until he could not breathe and threatened to kill him outside a Bovey residence, according to the complaint.
Shon Carl Daniels, of Nashwauk, faces felony counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and threats of violence with reckless disregard for risk, and a misdemeanor count of fifth-degree assault for inflicting or attempting bodily harm, in Itasca County District Court. The charges were filed October 22.
According to the complaint, at about 12:13 a.m. on October 11, deputies were dispatched to a residence in Bovey after the victim reported being assaulted by Daniels. The victim told dispatchers he had been struck with a baseball bat that had spikes welded onto it and that Daniels left the scene on a red four-wheeler.

When deputies arrived, the victim said he did not need medical attention. He explained that earlier, he had returned from Duluth with two other people and dropped them off at a residence. The victim then went to his own address in Bovey but began receiving text messages from Daniels. The victim tried to call one of the people he had dropped off but got no answer, so he returned to that address.
The complaint states that when the victim arrived, Daniels was sitting on his four-wheeler. Daniels got off, grabbed an aluminum bat with spikes and struck the victim in the rib cage, leaving a mark. The victim said he caught the bat under his arm, but Daniels took him to the ground, causing a bleeding scrape on his elbow.
While the victim was on the ground, Daniels put both hands around his neck and squeezed until the victim could not breathe. The victim said the choking lasted about 30 seconds, that he felt his eyes popping and that Daniels told him, “I’m going to kill you.” The victim had a red mark on his neck.
The victim said he was able to roll Daniels off and threw the bat away. Daniels ran to collect the bat and left on his four-wheeler. While deputies were speaking with the victim, he received a text message from Daniels saying he had watched police in the area.
A witness told deputies he heard yelling outside, went to the front door and saw Daniels and the victim fighting. The witness saw a bat get thrown away from the fight, then saw Daniels grab the bat, start his four-wheeler and drive off. The witness described the bat as aluminum with about five metal spikes that looked like railroad spikes. After Daniels left, the witness checked on the victim.
Daniels was arrested on October 20.
According to the complaint, Daniels has prior convictions for DWI in March 2024 and November 2023, and for fleeing a peace officer by means other than a motor vehicle in March 2024. The complaint says Daniels has violated probation twice on these offenses.
