A Minneapolis man is charged with hitting a woman in the head with a hatchet as she was leaving a home, according to a criminal complaint.
Frank Applewhite, who was 73 at the time of the alleged offense, faces felony counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm. The complaint was issued Oct. 14 in Hennepin County District Court, and bail was set at $75,000.
According to the complaint, officers were called Oct. 12 to an assault with a weapon at a home in Minneapolis and spoke with the woman at the hospital. She told them that as she was leaving the house, Applewhite came up behind her and hit her in the head with a hatchet. When she raised her hand to block more blows, the hatchet cut her hand, which needed six stitches, the complaint says.

A man who had come to pick her up told officers he heard screaming from the house, ran inside and took the hatchet away from Applewhite.
A woman inside the home invited officers in, where they saw blood on the kitchen and living room floors and a hatchet matching the woman’s description, according to the complaint.
