A driver sped away from a Robbinsdale traffic stop, crashed into a pick-up truck and ran from officers before being arrested, according to the complaint.

Marquise Dequatae McKee, 31, faces three charges filed October 15 in Hennepin County District Court: fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, criminal vehicular operation resulting in bodily harm while under the influence of alcohol and fifth-degree drug possession.

According to the complaint, a Robbinsdale police officer on patrol at about 8:28 p.m. on October 13 saw a vehicle with an expired temporary registration on County Road 81. The officer checked the registration and learned the registered owner’s license was canceled for public safety reasons. As the officer followed, the driver reached speeds near 50 mph in a 30 mph zone.

The officer turned on his emergency lights to make a traffic stop. The driver rolled slowly through an intersection, pulled to the right as if stopping, then merged back into traffic and stopped at a gas station.

The driver first gave the officer a different name before the officer identified him as McKee, the complaint says. McKee told the officer the car was not his and he did not know the registration was expired, and when asked for his license he admitted it was canceled. The officer told McKee to stay in the vehicle while he returned to his squad.

The complaint states McKee then put the vehicle in drive and fled the stop, heading onto West Broadway at a high rate of speed. The officer pursued with lights and siren. McKee drove through an intersection and collided with a pick-up truck, disabling his vehicle. He ran from the scene on foot but was detained by officers a short distance away.

While on the ground, McKee told officers he had “swallowed fent.” He became unresponsive, and medics from HCMC responded. The complaint says medics did not believe McKee was overdosing. While in the ambulance, officers detected an odor of alcohol on McKee’s breath. Officers also found a small baggie containing 4.5 grams of fentanyl in his pocket, which tested positive for the drug.

The passenger of the pick-up truck struck by McKee was transported to HCMC and reported head and neck pain from the crash. At the hospital, officers obtained a search warrant for a blood sample from McKee, which was collected at about 11:05 p.m. and sent to the BCA for testing.
