A man chased a woman with a knife and stabbed through her backpack as she tried to escape, according to charges. Metro Transit Police responded to the reported attempted stabbing near Chicago Avenue and 16th Street in Minneapolis on Sept. 20.
John Albert Henagan, 58, of Minneapolis, is charged in Hennepin County District Court with one felony count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
The woman told police she did not know Henagan and had never interacted with him before. She said he ran toward her with a knife, chased her around a corner and threatened to kill her, according to the criminal complaint.
She told officers he tried to stab her twice near Elliot Park Grocery. She turned away during one attempt and the knife went through her backpack. She then ran into the store and called 911, the complaint says.
Responding officers saw Henagan lunge toward a group of people with an object in his hand, making quick stabbing motions as the group ran away. A witness told officers he was trying to stab people.
While speaking with the woman, officers saw Henagan close a knife and put it in his pocket. They arrested him and recovered the knife. The woman showed officers the cut in her backpack, according to the complaint.
