A man pointed a handgun at a woman and threatened to kill her before she sought help through a message to a friend, according to charges. The alleged assault happened Sept. 14 at a Saint Paul apartment, and officers responded two days later.
Khaliq Amir Jones, 30, of Saint Paul, is charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
According to the complaint, officers went to the 1100 block of Westminster Street around 11:18 a.m. Sept. 16 after a caller reported receiving a message from a woman who said Jones had threatened her with a gun.
Officers heard a man’s voice inside and knocked several times before the woman answered. She began crying when they asked whether Jones had a gun and told them, “He is going to kill me.”
The woman said Jones had asked, “Do you want to die today?” two days earlier, then picked up a handgun, pulled back its slide and pointed it at her. She said he also threatened a shootout with police if she called them.
She described continued threats over the next two days and said she messaged for help because she needed to leave. She told officers Jones hid the gun in the kitchen when police knocked.
Officers arrested Jones and found a loaded handgun in a kitchen cupboard.
During interviews, Jones initially denied a conflict or knowledge of a gun. He later acknowledged an argument and said he had found the handgun and kept it for protection, but denied threatening the woman with it.
