A man firing from a bicycle toward an SUV wounded another man who was looking at his phone near a Minneapolis Boys and Girls Club, according to charges. Officers responded to gunfire near the 2500 block of Irving Avenue North around 11:54 p.m. July 25.
Jerry D’John Sanders, 18, of Minneapolis, is charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
Police found six spent casings and learned that a man with a gunshot wound had walked into a nearby hospital. The man said he had been looking at his phone near the club when he felt pain in his back, according to the complaint.
Surveillance video showed a person on a bicycle shooting at a black SUV. The driver sped away, and the cyclist rode southwest.
Investigators linked the recovered casings to a separate Sept. 1 shooting through a ballistics database. The complaint says a gun recovered from Sanders matched the weapon used in the July shooting.
A search of Sanders’s phone produced location data placing him near the scene. At 12:28 a.m. July 26, he sent a message saying he had been in a shootout about 30 minutes earlier, according to investigators.
During an interview, Sanders said the SUV had followed him as he rode home and that he heard someone yell, “That’s him.” He said he rode behind the SUV and fired because he felt threatened.
He told investigators he had not seen who was inside the SUV or seen any weapons.
