Four juveniles were detained after a shooting in Brooklyn Center on Friday, with police recovering a handgun after a foot chase in the area.
Brooklyn Center officers were called around 5:30 p.m. to a report of a shooting in the 5600 block of Xerxes Avenue, according to the Brooklyn Center Police Department. As officers responded, they learned that four juvenile boys believed to have been involved had fled the area.
Two officers from other agencies were in a nearby parking lot for a prisoner exchange when they saw the shooting, the department said. Those officers chased the group on foot and detained four juvenile boys. One is believed to have been directly involved.

During the foot chase, officers saw one of the boys hide or drop something, police said. A K-9 team searched the area and found a handgun with an extended magazine and officers recovered six or more spent casings.
One person took themselves to a hospital with injuries reported as not life-threatening. Their involvement in the shooting has not been determined, police said.
The department said initial information suggested the incident may have been an officer-involved shooting, but no officer discharged a firearm. The investigation is active.
Brooklyn Center police were assisted by the St. Louis Park, Brooklyn Park, Metro Transit and Robbinsdale police departments, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, crime lab personnel and Minnesota State Patrol aviation.
