A Minneapolis man joined two others in a daylight robbery attempt on Plymouth Avenue North that ended with the victim shot in the arm as he tried to escape.

Jakai Teajai Rice, 18, faces charges of aiding and abetting 1st-degree aggravated robbery and 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, according to a complaint filed Monday in Hennepin County District Court.

According to court records, the victim arrived at the 1400 block of Plymouth Avenue North in Minneapolis on June 21 to meet three men later identified as Rice, Tyreek Taeshaun Dewayne Hall and Rashawn Deandre Coleman. The victim told officers that while meeting with the group, all three reached into his vehicle in an attempt to take his firearm. The victim accelerated away, but his phone was taken and multiple shots were fired at his vehicle as he fled.

The victim drove himself to North Memorial Health Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his right upper arm. Officers responding to the hospital learned that the victim’s vehicle had also been struck by at least one bullet on the rear driver’s side.

The next day, a concerned citizen contacted police and provided surveillance footage from a nearby residence. Investigators reviewed the video, which showed the victim’s white Dodge Challenger backing into a parking lot at 5:34 p.m. Hall and Coleman exited a building, followed by Rice, who stood near the entrance with a fourth unidentified male. The footage showed Hall and Coleman approaching the driver’s side of the victim’s vehicle, with Rice joining them minutes later.

At about 5:45 p.m., Coleman was seen removing a black rifle from beneath his clothing while Hall drew a handgun. Both pointed their firearms at the victim, and a struggle ensued through the driver’s window as all three reached inside. As the victim sped away, Hall, Coleman and Rice were all seen pointing firearms at the fleeing vehicle. Hall and Coleman appeared to fire multiple rounds, and Rice turned and appeared to fire additional shots as the vehicle left.

On June 24, officers executed a search warrant at a residence on the same block. A resident told police she awoke to all three men entering her apartment immediately after hearing gunshots. She identified Coleman as the man carrying the rifle and Hall as the man in the grey sweatshirt. During the search, officers recovered a black iPhone, a black extended handgun magazine, a box of .223 caliber ammunition, a live 9mm cartridge and a black sweatshirt.

Rice is scheduled to appear in court on a future date.
