A teenage boy was shot and killed late Sunday night in Minneapolis, and another juvenile is in custody as investigators work to determine what led up to the gunfire.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said officers were called just before 10:50 p.m. to the 2900 block of Russell Avenue North for a report of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found a boy dead in the basement of the home. Initial reports to 911 indicated the shooting may have been self-inflicted, but police later learned the victim may have been shot by another teenager who was also at the house.

O’Hara said a group of juveniles had gathered in the basement to celebrate a birthday when a gun went off, striking the victim once and killing him. The juvenile who allegedly fired the shot was taken into custody at the scene. Police have not yet confirmed the victim’s age or identity.

Minneapolis Police forensic scientists processed the scene overnight and investigators were seeking a search warrant to search the home. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office also responded.

O’Hara said the incident remains under investigation to determine whether the shooting was accidental or intentional. “As a father myself, I cannot imagine what it would be like to go through crime and violence to your child like this,” he said. “We are working to determine exactly the circumstances of what occurred and to bring whoever is responsible to justice if this is in fact a homicide.”
