A man armed with a chainsaw was shot by Brooklyn Center police late Wednesday night after officers responded to a domestic disturbance.

Two people are dead after a reported domestic disturbance and an officer-involved shooting Tuesday evening in Freeborn County.

Just after 9 p.m. on Monday, June 2, officers from the Paynesville Police Department, Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and Cold Spring Police Department were dispatched to a home on the 600 block of Stearns Avenue.

Officers arrived and tried to make contact with the suspect from outside the house. Police heard a woman screaming before both the woman and the second man exited the home.

Police were dispatched just before 3:45 p.m. to a reported domestic dispute on the 600 block of 8th Avenue North. A woman told dispatchers that a man had threatened her and lunged at her with his fists raised.

The suspect fled at the Pembina border crossing and the pursuit ensued, quickly escalating as he crossed into Minnesota, winding through multiple counties.

The incident began shortly after 10 a.m. on April 7, when law enforcement initiated a pursuit that concluded on County Road 9, west of the intersection with County Road 16 in Fischer Township.

Derek Anthony Tyler West, 31, is accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting his daughter over several years, beginning in Feb. 2020, when she was just seven years old.
