Double Homicide Suspect Shot by Police in Brooklyn Center

A man was shot and killed by police in Brooklyn Center Monday afternoon after officers were confronted by an armed suspect.

The suspect is believed to be connected to a deadly double homicide earlier in Minneapolis that left a 14-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man dead.

The incident unfolded around 3:55 p.m. Feb. 23 in the business area near the 5500 block of Brooklyn Boulevard, where Brooklyn Center officers were dispatched on reports of a man waving a gun outside retail establishments. When officers arrived, authorities say they encountered the suspect armed with a handgun and an exchange of gunfire followed.

Police said the man was struck during the confrontation. Officers immediately rendered aid at the scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were struck by gunfire. Investigators recovered a handgun at the scene.

Preliminary information released by Brooklyn Center police indicates the incident is connected to a double homicide reported in Minneapolis less than 30 minutes earlier. Authorities have not publicly identified the man as of publication.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted Brooklyn Center police during the response as officers secured the area and conducted the investigation. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard procedure following a use-of-force incident.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been requested to investigate the shooting and will lead the review into the use of force. Officials confirmed the involved officers were wearing body-worn cameras during the encounter.

Police said there is no ongoing danger to the public related to the incident. The investigation remains active and additional information is expected to be released by the BCA as it becomes available.
