Prosecutors say Deshon Kanye Gregory showed up to a home near 15th Street and 11th Avenue South just before 6:30 p.m. on July 15 after texting a woman who lives at the residence and telling her to “come out.” That woman told police Gregory was upset over $40 she had borrowed from him during a past relationship. She said Gregory arrived with another woman and tried to start a fight.

Earlier the same day, police had responded to the same residence after Gregory reportedly showed up with another man who was armed with a gun and threatening people. Officers took that man into custody and executed a search warrant at the home. Despite that, Gregory returned later that evening and again confronted the woman he had been texting, ultimately leading to the fatal shooting.

The charges say that after threatening to shoot one of the victim’s sisters, Gregory backed into the street and fired multiple rounds toward the home and front yard, where four people had gathered. 30-year-old Lafayette Anthony Collaso was struck by gunfire while on the front porch and died from his injuries at the scene. The three women were not hit.

Police recovered eleven 9mm shell casings at the scene and video surveillance reportedly captured the shooting.

Gregory fled the scene and remains at-large as of publication. A warrant was issued for his arrest, citing public safety concerns, and a judge set bail at $1.5 million.

Court records show Gregory is already facing two pending assault cases in Hennepin County, including a felony domestic assault by strangulation charge and a separate gross misdemeanor assault. He is also under juvenile court supervision.

If convicted of second-degree intentional murder, Gregory faces up to 40 years in prison. Each attempted murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.
