When they arrived, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds on the sidewalk. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial information suggests the man was part of a group gathered outside when someone approached and opened fire at close range before leaving on foot. About 12 minutes later, a man was dropped off at Hennepin Healthcare with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Investigators determined he had been injured during the same shooting.
Police forensic scientists processed the scene and collected evidence as detectives worked to piece together the sequence of events. Officials have not said whether the downtown shooting is connected to other recent gunfire incidents.

O’Hara said eight people have been wounded and three killed in shootings across the city since Monday night, calling the violence “deeply unsettling.” In his statement he noted, “Across three separate multiple-victim shootings, eight people have been injured by gunfire and three have lost their lives. Our thoughts are with the victims who lost their lives, with those who are now fighting to recover from their injuries, and with the families and community members who are affected. While this level of violence is cause for concern, our resolve to fight for the safety of every person in our community is unwavering. We will aggressively pursue every lead, but we also need the community’s help. Anyone with information about what happened is encouraged to come forward—anonymously if necessary—so we can hold those responsible accountable and prevent further harm.”
The shooting marks the third homicide since Monday evening. Just before 1:30 p.m. Monday, police responded to a mass shooting near East 29th Street and Clinton Avenue where one man was killed and six others wounded when a gunman fired from a vehicle with a .223 rifle. Around 8 p.m., a separate shooting on the 2700 block of 3rd Avenue South left one man dead and another injured. In addition to those three incidents, a 17-year-old boy was shot and wounded around 9 p.m. near Barnes Place and Irving Avenue North.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the man killed on Hennepin Avenue and release his official cause of death. No arrests have been announced.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Minneapolis Police.
