An adult male was killed and six other people were wounded Tuesday afternoon when a gunman armed with a rifle opened fire on a group of people in south Minneapolis.
Police said the shooting occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. after ShotSpotter detected about 30 rounds fired near 29th Street East and Clinton Avenue.

Officers arrived to find a man dead on the sidewalk. Six other victims — five men and one woman — were discovered at nearby locations suffering from various gunshot wounds. Three of them had serious injuries, but authorities say all are expected to survive. Authorities believe all of the victims are adults.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said in a media briefing that early indications show that at least one person in the group was targeted. The suspect fled in a vehicle, and no description has been released. Police confirmed the shooter used a .223 rifle but said there was no indication it was fired in full automatic mode.
“Our thoughts right now are obviously with the person who lost his life, with those who are trying to recover from their injuries, and with all those families and members of our community who have been affected,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said during a media briefing. “Thanks to the swift response from Minneapolis police officers, our investigators are pursuing strong leads at this time. We’re thankful for the assistance that we’ve received from businesses and residents in the area.”

O’Hara said the department’s crime lab is processing dozens of pieces of evidence from the scene. “We want all people in our community to know that we remain committed to doing everything we possibly can to reduce serious street crime while rebuilding trust with our residents,” he said. “We will not stop until we can make every block in this city safe for all of our residents, but we cannot do that alone. Obviously we need partners, so certainly we are asking anyone else in the community who may have information about what occurred here to please come forward, even anonymously.”
Police said the investigation remains in its early stages. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
