A Minneapolis man followed another man through his yard, threatened to rob him and took his keys, according to a criminal complaint.

Keith Earl Chambers Jr., 31, is charged in Hennepin County District Court with simple robbery. The charge was filed October 29.

According to the complaint, Minneapolis police were sent on October 27 to the 2700 block of Russell Avenue North on a report of a person in crisis with a firearm and a robbery. Officers could not find the suspect. The man told officers Chambers took his keys and pointed a gun at him. He appeared very afraid, the complaint says.

Surveillance video the man provided partly showed the encounter, according to the complaint. It showed him in his yard with a small dog when Chambers came into the yard. As the man tried to walk away, Chambers followed him toward the front door holding his waistband, told him to get in the house or he would be killed and said he would rob him. Chambers also demanded the man’s phone and said he was going to take the dog, the complaint says. Officers did not see a gun in the video.

The next day, Chambers called 911 from the 2900 block of Dupont Avenue North and said he had blacked out, taken the man’s keys and thrown them into an abandoned building, according to the complaint. Officers arrested him there. In an interview at the jail, Chambers admitted taking the keys and threatening to rob the man but denied that a gun was involved.
