An International Falls man beat a mailbox and a light pole with an aluminum bat while saying he would kill someone as a family arrived to trick-or-treat on Halloween night, according to the complaint.

Steven Wesley Toth, who was 60 at the time of the alleged offense, is charged in Koochiching County District Court with two felonies: second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and threats of violence. The complaint was filed Nov. 2.

According to the complaint, police were called at about 7:15 p.m. Oct. 31 to the 2600 block of 2nd Avenue East on a report of a man with a baseball bat yelling and threatening people. A man who had just arrived at a house with his family to trick-or-treat told officers he heard noises and saw Toth walk out onto the road, muttering that he would kill someone and “Watch me.”

Toth hit a mailbox with the bat, then went to a light pole and struck it again and again while saying, “I’m going to kill them,” the complaint says. The man hurried his family back to their vehicle. When Toth noticed them, he walked quickly toward the vehicle, frightening the children.
