A man forced open a side door at a Saint Paul apartment complex late at night, tried to steal a bike with a woman and ran from police through wooded areas before being caught with fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine, according to the complaint.

Stanley Reginald Warren, 50, faces three felony charges, third-degree burglary and two counts of fifth-degree drug possession and a misdemeanor charge of fleeing a peace officer by means other than a motor vehicle.

Police responded to Soul Apartments in Saint Paul at about 11 p.m. on October 25 after a security company monitoring live video saw a man and woman moving bikes around in the building’s bike storage room and checking tires on bike racks. Officers arrived and saw the pair, later identified as Warren and a woman, trying to take a bike out the back door. Police ordered them to stop. The woman was apprehended in the bike room, but Warren fled on foot with the bike.

An officer chased Warren westbound through wooded and open areas between Robert and Wabasha Streets. Warren dropped the bike in a clearing and kept running, ignoring commands to stop. The officer lost sight of Warren briefly but then spotted his jacket and continued the pursuit. Warren eventually fell to the ground and was taken into custody.

During a search incident to arrest, police found suspected narcotics on Warren. A K9 search in the area where Warren was apprehended turned up a clear baggie containing more suspected narcotics. Presumptive tests on the substances found on Warren yielded positive results for cocaine and fentanyl, with a net weight of 0.80 grams. The substance found in the grass tested positive for methamphetamine, weighing 1.69 grams.

After being advised of his rights, Warren told police he and the woman went to the apartment complex to steal a bike for her and smoke narcotics. He admitted forcing open the side door by yanking on it and said they were trying to take a bike when police arrived. Warren said he knew he had warrants and ran to avoid going to jail. He denied discarding narcotics while fleeing but admitted the drugs found on him contained fentanyl.

The complaint says Warren had outstanding warrants in two Ramsey County cases for failing to appear in court and a parole violation warrant from the Department of Corrections.

The complaint says he has a prior felony conviction.

The charges were filed October 27 in Ramsey County District Court.
