A 25-year-old Isle man led police on a chase through town, crashed into a squad car and tried to escape on an E-Bike before being found hiding in the woods, according to the complaint.

Cody Roy Moose faces six charges in Mille Lacs County District Court: felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, felony fifth-degree drug possession, felony obstructing legal process, felony first-degree damage to property, misdemeanor fleeing a peace officer by a means other than a motor vehicle and misdemeanor reckless driving.

According to the complaint, an Isle police officer recognized a vehicle in the Family Dollar parking lot on September 30 as one Moose was known to drive and was aware Moose had a felony warrant. The officer saw Moose inside the Trailside gas station and approached him. Moose told the officer he needed to get his phone from his car, then got into the driver’s seat and started the vehicle.

As the officer tried to turn off the car, Moose drove away, fleeing eastbound on East Superior Street. The officer activated lights and sirens and pursued Moose, who turned onto Sunset Drive North, spun around in the grass and headed back west. The officer struck Moose’s vehicle with the squad car’s push bumper, but Moose continued driving toward Highway 47 and onto Snowbird Lane.

Moose left the roadway, drove through a backyard and continued onto East Isle Street, then into a yard and the Cenex parking lot. He then headed south on Highway 47, drove into a ditch and through the Isle Evangelical Free Church property before heading west on Oak Street. Officers performed a PIT maneuver and ordered Moose out at gunpoint, but Moose ignored commands and kept trying to free his vehicle from the ditch.

Moose eventually got his vehicle loose and continued north on Maben Avenue South. During the pursuit, Moose slammed on his brakes twice, causing the squad car to rear-end him. The chase ended when Moose pulled behind a residence on Naawaakwaa Street, entered the home and then left on an E-Bike. Officers followed but could not immediately locate him.

Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office and Mille Lacs Tribal Police arrived to assist, deploying a drone. Tribal Police found Moose hiding in the woods behind the residence. He was taken into custody and searched, but officers did not find anything on him. A syringe containing suspected drugs was found on the floorboard of Moose’s vehicle, and a field test indicated the substance was fentanyl.

The complaint says Moose has prior controlled substance convictions.

The charges were filed October 2 in Mille Lacs County District Court.
