A Spring Valley man was pulled over for speeding and found with a .22-caliber revolver, glass pipes with burnt residue and no permit to carry, prosecutors say.
Sean Stephen Michael Coon Jr., 29, faces five charges in Mower County District Court: possessing ammunition or a firearm as a user of controlled substances, second-degree DWI for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance, carrying a pistol without a permit, driving after revocation and speeding.
According to the complaint, a Mower County sheriff’s deputy stopped a 2011 Ford Fusion at about 9:15 p.m. on Sept. 30 after clocking it at 68 mph in a 60-mph zone on Highway 56. The deputy also noticed the driver’s side mirror was hanging down. When the deputy approached, he identified the lone driver as Sean Stephen Michael Coon Jr. and observed that he had a slight shake to his hands, rapid speech and slow reactive pupils.

The deputy learned that Coon’s driving privileges were revoked and that he had an active warrant for his arrest. Coon admitted to drinking a “Twisted Tea” or “two” and, when asked about methamphetamine use, said he had used that morning. Field sobriety tests were administered, with Coon failing the Modified Romberg and Walk and Turn tests. A preliminary breath test showed a result of 0.03.
Deputies searched the vehicle and found multiple empty “Twisted Tea” containers and several glass pipes with burnt residue throughout the car. In the glove box, they found an uncased .22 caliber revolver with a single spent casing inside the cylinder, along with another glass pipe. The deputy confirmed that Coon did not have a permit to carry a firearm.
At the jail, the deputy obtained a search warrant for a blood or urine sample, and Coon agreed to provide a blood sample. The sample was sent to the BCA laboratory for analysis. After being read his Miranda rights, Coon told the deputy the handgun was not his and that he was planning to fix it for a friend and return it to the friend’s brother’s residence. He also stated he had recently started using methamphetamine again, using both the night before and that morning.
The complaint says Coon has prior convictions for DWI involving any amount of a Schedule I or II controlled substance, with incidents dated July 21, 2025 and January 21, 2026, both in Mower County District Court.
The charges were filed Oct. 1 in Mower County District Court.
