A 19-year-old New Hope man is charged with attempted murder after a man walking to a McDonald’s in Minneapolis was shot by someone inside a vehicle, according to charges.
Daveion James Thompson Jr. faces seven felony charges: attempted second-degree murder (drive-by shooting), possessing a firearm or ammunition after being adjudicated delinquent for a crime of violence, possessing a machine gun or machine gun conversion kit, aiding and abetting second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, aiding and abetting second-degree riot while armed with a dangerous weapon, aiding and abetting a drive-by shooting toward a person and aiding and abetting a drive-by shooting toward an occupied motor vehicle or building.
The attempted murder, assault and drive-by shooting counts allege that he acted alone or intentionally aided or conspired with another.
According to the complaint, Minneapolis police responded to a shooting at about 8:59 p.m. on August 11, 2026. About 17 discharged cartridge casings were recovered near the scene, and officers found a blood-like substance that led to the front door of a nearby home. The victim later reported that he was walking to the McDonald’s in the area when someone inside a vehicle driving nearby shot him. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment after being shot in the arm.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from a gas station next to the McDonald’s. The footage showed a vehicle pulling in at 8:55 p.m., with two people getting out, going into the store together and returning to the vehicle to pump gas. A third male was seen in the vehicle.
Officers recognized the driver, a juvenile, and identified another person in the vehicle as Thompson. Thompson was seen wearing a red glove in the video. Two minutes after the two returned to pump gas, the vehicle drove out of the gas station lot and into the nearby McDonald’s parking lot, the complaint says.
A second surveillance video from the McDonald’s parking lot showed the victim walking with two people, followed by a black sedan that the complaint says was the same vehicle seen at the gas station minutes earlier. Later that night, at about 2:19 a.m. on August 12, officers responded to two ShotSpotter activations at the address where the victim had returned. Seventy-two discharged cartridge casings were recovered in front of the home.
On August 13, law enforcement stopped a vehicle in Brooklyn Park and found Thompson and the previously identified driver inside. A search turned up three firearms, two hidden in a pillowcase in the rear of the vehicle and one under the juvenile’s seat. According to the complaint, a database comparison of markings on the casings found that two of those guns, the one under the juvenile’s seat and one from the pillowcase, match casings from the first and second shootings.
Investigators also found a video on Thompson’s cellphone, time-stamped August 11 at 8:55 p.m., showing a right hand wearing a red glove holding a black gun with a brown or tan slide equipped with an auto-sear. The video appeared to be filmed as the vehicle pulled into the gas station. The person filming is heard saying, “don’t let me catch a snake, I’m going to fry his a**,” according to the complaint.
The complaint says Thompson was previously adjudicated delinquent of first-degree aggravated robbery, a crime of violence, and is prohibited from possessing firearms.
The charges were filed September 30 in Hennepin County District Court.
