A man crashed into another vehicle while fleeing police in a stolen University of Minnesota van, according to charges. The June 22 pursuit began in Minneapolis, and officers later found the van in Saint Paul.
Tony Alan Sage, 28, of Minneapolis, is charged in Ramsey County with five felonies: unlawful firearm possession, unlawful ammunition possession, motor vehicle theft, fifth-degree drug possession and fleeing police in a motor vehicle.
University police received a report around noon that a red Ford Transit van with a U Market logo had been stolen from Fleet Services on Talmage Avenue Southeast. A staff member used the van’s GPS tracker to relay its location to officers, according to the complaint.
Police spotted the van and attempted a traffic stop near East Hennepin Avenue and Industrial Boulevard Northeast. The driver ignored emergency lights and a siren, then struck another vehicle at Cleveland and Buford avenues while continuing to flee, the complaint says.
An officer ended the pursuit as the driver continued into Ramsey County at Highway 280. GPS updates led police to a parking lot on University Avenue West in Saint Paul. A maintenance worker reported seeing people leave the van and run toward a nearby apartment building.
Officers detained Sage as he left the building and found a passenger in its entryway. The officer who pursued the van identified Sage as its driver. Police found material in Sage’s pocket that field-tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed 1.45 grams, according to the complaint.
In the entryway, officers recovered a red bag containing the van key and two loaded handguns, each with a round in the chamber. A backpack contained marijuana and a live 9mm round.
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension later analyzed DNA from one of the handguns. The complaint says the sample contained DNA from four people and that the statistical analysis strongly supported Sage’s inclusion in the mixture.
Prosecutors allege Sage was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition because of prior convictions.
