Gunfire erupted outside a Minneapolis home in late May as two people were shot while children played nearby, according to newly filed charges.
Raquan Rahjai Johnson, 21, of Minneapolis, faces two counts of drive-by shooting toward a person and two counts of 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
According to the complaint, officers responded to a shooting on May 24, 2026, in Minneapolis. The victim told officers she had gone outside when she was shot in the foot during a second round of gunfire. Another victim reported sitting outside with about 10 children between the ages of 1 and 12 when they heard a first round of about 10 gunshots, followed by a second round of about 15 to 20 shots.

The second victim said they tried to run inside during the second round and was shot in the arm.
A witness told officers they believed the shots came from a dark grey or black older model Ford Escape that drove east on 8th from Penn Avenue, circled the block and then drove northbound on Penn Avenue North. Officers reviewed surveillance footage and identified a suspect vehicle and its Minnesota license plate.
Another witness identified Raquan Rahjai Johnson as the shooter in the vehicle. On June 5, 2026, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in Saint Paul and took Johnson into custody.
During a post-Miranda interview, Johnson told officers he had pulled up to the “side block” and “he got to shooting.” Johnson said he drove up to Penn Avenue and began to shoot again. He initially claimed he was the driver and his associate was shooting, but when confronted with surveillance video showing only one occupant in the vehicle, Johnson admitted he was alone in the car at the time of the shooting.
The charges allege Johnson fired multiple rounds from a vehicle toward people, striking two victims and used a dangerous weapon in the assaults.
The complaint was filed Tuesday, July 7, in Hennepin County District Court.
